The provisional new seven wonders of nature

More than a million people have voted for their favourite natural attractions

Founder of the New Seven Wonders of the World organisation (N7W), Canadian-Swiss Bernard Weber, was dissatisfied with the original list of wonders, as it wasn't compiled using democratic means.

In order to effect change he started a global campaign in 2007 promoting public vote, so citizens around the world could voice their opinions on what they thought were the world's most beautiful locations.

More than a million people have voted for their favourite natural attractions since then via telephone, text messaging and social networking sites.

The number of initially proposed candidates was around several hundreds, to be finally reduced to 28 locations by a panel of experts.

Voting closed on 11/11/11 - an easy date to remember - and according to the N7W organisation the votes are now being checked, validated and independently verified, and the confirmed winners will be announced starting early 2012 during the Official Inauguration ceremonies.

While we wait for the final verdict we can have a look to the provisional list of the seven top sites, based on the first count of vote results:

1. The Amazon Rainforest - 5.5 million square kilometres of tropical rainforest around the largest river in the world by volume.

2. Halong Bay, Vietnam - A UNESCO World Heritage site, the bay is 500 million years' worth of limestone karsts and isles, many of which are filled with caves, and where several floating villages exist.

3. Iguazu Falls, Argentina and Brazil - One of the world's largest waterfalls. "Devil's Throat" is the tallest of its 225 cascades at 80m in height

4. Jeju Island, South Korea - A World Heritage site, this volcanic island rises out of the sea and is dominated by a dormant volcano, Hallasan. A further 360 satellite volcanoes are found nearby .

5. Komodo National Park, Indonesia - Here is where the Komodo dragon lives, a national park founded in 1980.

6. Puerto Princesa Underground River, Philippines - With 8.2 kilometres of navigable waterways it is claimed to be the world's longest underground river. A cave system with plenty of stalactites and stalagmites.

7. Table Mountain, South Africa - And last but not least, Cape Town's flat-topped mountain hosts the richest floral ecosystem in the world with over 1,470 floral species.
