One holiday destination I tend to find does not get mentioned as much as others is the island of Malta. As a small island just off the coast of Italy, generally it is overlooked as a holiday destination for the larger, more tourist-friendly countries. However, if you need to get away from the hustle & bustle of city life, then my personal recommendation would be Malta or the neighbouring island of Gozo.
I have only been there once but I would still class it as my favourite holiday destination so far. I stayed on the island of Gozo, a three hour flight from London Gatwick, which boasts beautiful views from most houses and apartments. Due to the fact that it is such a small island everything is within a half an hour car journey, handy for those hot days where you really do not fancy a 3 hour car journey
The Maltese capital of Valetta is the hub of activity on the island if you fancy doing something one evening. It has regular plays and concerts as well as being home to St. Johns Co-Cathedral, a big attraction on the island. As well as this, scuba diving in the blue Maltese oceans is a must for anyone wanting to have 'The Malta Experience' and the local Maltese restaurants also pride themselves on their food so wherever you go you will be guaranteed a good meal.
I believe the island has some of the best views you will ever see, and the weather is not bad too, with temperatures generally in the mid 20's plus during the peak of summer. When I was there for a week last summer, there was not a cloudy day to be seen, and this was only just at the end of May!
Overall, Malta is a country very proud of its heritage, and celebrates it accordingly with open air fish markets and its occasional parades and carnivals. If you are looking to get away from the city this summer then Malta would be my recommendation. The stunning views, hot temperatures and local cuisine would be enough to make anyone fall in love with the island, and i know i certainly have.

Hi Ben. Went to Malta about 6/7 years ago. Liked it people was very friendly. Very English. What I liked to was you drive on the same side as us! 6 of us went and it was february, and it was the worst weather in 28 years. Terrible rain storms. I would like to go back again one day. Perhaps a different month. People say you rather love or hate Malta............me, loved it. Enjoyed your write up about Malta, bought back memories. | |
