Finally we all get our salary cheques and for many, that means booking a holiday in the summer

Beach-Heart.jpgIt seems like just seven days ago we were being warned to prepare for the most depressing day of the year.

What a difference a week makes. If you're feeling perkier yesterday it is apparently because it was the happiest Monday of the year, thanks largely to the fact that workers have received their long awaited  first post-Christmas paycheck  I know I was glad to see mine!) As a consequence many have decided to take the plunge and book their summer holiday.

Dubbed 'Happy Monday' by psychologists, our cheery disposition is said to have a lot to do with the anticipation of our summer break.

Dr David Holmes, a senior psychologist at Manchester Metropolitan University, said: 'We all go in to work on that Monday, January 30, with renewed vigour, well maybe that is a little over exaggerated, but certainly, we feel a little better!

Apparently, this particular day is when we feel most happy!

He goes on to say:- 'The financial excesses of Christmas means that January is a particularly difficult and long month for most of us cash-wise, and the first salary payday of the year hugely reduces the stress of that long wait to reinvigorate our finances.'

It is no coincidence that Happy Monday falls the day after what travel agencies predicted would be their busiest weekend of the year, Dr Holmes said.

The last weekend in January is traditionally the most favoured for booking a family getaway, according to Al Fresco holidays.

The same weekend last year apparently saw bookings with the luxury outdoor specialist increase year on year by 50 per cent.

Dr Holmes, meanwhile, predicted 11 happy days in total this year.

They include the two May bank holidays, the day the clocks go forward in March and Midsummer's Day in June. Well that one is easy…it is my birthday!
