Greece: a perfect summer holiday with a clear conscience

There is something that we - as European citizens - can do to help Greece to come out of its financial downward spiral.

greece3.jpgWhen austerity measures are increasing unemployment and creating a vicious circle of more budget cuts and lower growth it seems that the only sector Greece can rely on is tourism.

The country depends on tourism for about the 17% of its overall gross domestic product of nearly $350 billion, according to Time.

The Greek government is well aware of this. That's why, at the same time as negotiating billions in additional loans with the EU, it is launching drastic measures to encourage tourism, including the reduction of sales tax and airports fees for landing.

So it might as well not being entirely altruistic the decision of opting for holiday in Greece: their government is clearly doing us a favour too.

An idilic trip could be hopping from island to island between the diverse but equally stunning Cyclades while staying in some of the many white bleached villas on offer.

Starting off on the magical island of Santorini where you could see arguably the best sunset in the world either from the white and blue painted houses of Fira or Ia. During the day you could always relax on the volcanic sand beaches of Perissa, where you can go diving and snorkelling into the deep turquoise Aegean sea.

From there it's only a few hours by ferry to the island of Milos, island of love and birthplace of Aphrodite. You can explore its 74 beaches - some of which can only be reached by boat. Whilst  on your sailing trip don't miss the chance of visiting the underwater caves where pirates used to hide their bounties.

After Milos, the place to go is Paros: the largest of the Cyclades. A perfect island to explore by scooter and go to its mountain towns and vineyards. Its notorious fresh seafood or kleftiko washed down with some local wine or ouzo.

On your way back to Athens from Paros, a visit to Syros's Unesco world heritage town centre is a must. A reminder of Greece's forgotten glorious times.
